FDM Machine Technician (Additive Manufacturing)

Location: Carlsbad, CA
Schedule:

  • Weekday Shift: Monday–Friday, 6:00 AM – 2:30 PM
  • Weekend Shift: Friday–Monday, 6:00 AM – 2:30 PM

Type: Full-Time | Contract-to-Hire

  • Pay: $22/hr.

Summary

The FDM Machine Technician is responsible for operating and maintaining Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) 3D printers within a high-volume additive manufacturing environment. This role ensures efficient machine operation, consistent part quality, and adherence to production schedules.

The ideal candidate has strong mechanical aptitude, excellent attention to detail, and thrives in a fast-paced, technology-driven production setting.

Key Responsibilities

Machine Operation & Production

  • Set up, operate, and monitor FDM 3D printers throughout production runs.
  • Load thermoplastic filaments, perform calibration, and ensure proper bed leveling.
  • Review and verify build setup instructions and job files before initiating prints.
  • Track and document production progress, ensuring schedules and output targets are met.
  • Conduct daily machine checks, cleaning, and basic preventive maintenance to ensure reliable performance.

Quality Assurance & Post-Processing

  • Inspect printed parts for accuracy, surface finish, and overall quality.
  • Remove support materials and perform finishing processes (sanding, smoothing, vapor polishing, etc.).
  • Record inspection data and report any nonconformances or deviations to the Quality or Production team.
  • Maintain compliance with internal and customer-specific quality standards.

Material Handling & Documentation

  • Manage raw material usage and monitor filament inventory.
  • Label, organize, and store completed parts according to workflow requirements.
  • Log builds, maintenance, and material usage accurately in production tracking systems.
  • Maintain detailed and organized production documentation.

Continuous Improvement

  • Assist in identifying and troubleshooting printing or mechanical issues.
  • Participate in process improvement and workflow optimization initiatives.
  • Collaborate with Engineering, Quality, and Production teams to drive efficiency and consistency.

Skills & Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; technical or vocational training preferred.
  • 1–2 years of experience operating FDM 3D printers (Stratasys Fortus, Ultimaker, or similar).
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and technical troubleshooting ability.
  • Understanding of thermoplastic materials and additive manufacturing processes.
  • Ability to read and interpret build files, job travelers, and technical drawings.
  • Proficient computer and data-entry skills.
  • Highly detail-oriented, organized, and self-motivated.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs and stand for extended periods.

Preferred Experience

  • Hands-on experience with additive manufacturing technologies (FDM, MJF, SLA, or SLS).
  • Familiarity with Stratasys Insight, GrabCAD Print, or similar production software.
  • Basic knowledge of GD&T or blueprint reading.
  • Understanding of ISO 9001 / AS9100 quality standards.
